Chapter 13: Radar vs. "Rosemary's Baby"

1968 in AMERICA was fairly promising, with the expectations of the civil rights movement, inflation, the war in VIETNAM, & a few miscellaneous events as well. But while reading one her favorite magazines which covered the film industry in HOLLYWOOD one day MAUREEN O'REILLY read something that was so shocking that it nearly sent her to the delivery room at THE HENRY BLAKE MEMORIAL CLINIC that day! The headline read as follows: "POLISH FILM DIRECTOR MAKING HORROR FILM BASED ON A JEWISH WRITTEN NOVEL LINKED TO THE BOOK OF REVELATIONS". But it was what it read in the article itself that was the real shocker of all! Polish born film director ROMAN POLANSKI has been filming a horror film based on the novel "ROSEMARY'S BABY" as written by Jewish novelist IRA LEVIN and currently has been running into problems in production while filming at NEW YORK CITY'S famed DAKOTA APARTMENTS. Cast members such as MIA FARROW of tv's "PEYTON PLACE", and JOHN CASSAVETES of the famous short-lived tv series "JOHNNY STACCATO". along with veteran actresses HOPE SUMMERS of tv's "THE ANDY GRIFFITH SHOW", and RUTH GORDON and PATSY KELLY, together with veteran actor RALPH BELLAMY & newcomer CHARLES GRODIN are working as best they know how to in order to bring you (the AMERICAN PUBLIC) a horror film that focuses on how a group of devil-worshippers in NEW YORK CITY try to fast talk an expectant mother into allowing her baby to become the dreaded one SATAN plans to send upon the world according to the book of Revelations in the BIBLE! If any one in AMERICA, or anywhere else for that matter has the sense GOD gave them they will boycott this picture and force PARAMOUNT PICTURES to lose lots of money on it, thereby forcing both PARAMOUNT and POLANSKI out of the idea of making such a movie ever again period!!!

When RADAR read the article he was so mad he called in SAM FLAGG (formerly COl. FLAGG) into his office & said "FLAGG! Have you seen this magazine article about a horror movie being made, which is based upon a certain bible prophecy from the book of Revelations?" FLAGG read the article and calmly asked "How do you plan to keep such a film from being seen anywhere? You should know that nowadays when you see a western in a movie theatre today, that a guy in a white hat is gonna rob the bank when he rides into town & shooting a dog as he rides out of town leaving that dog for dead!" RADAR replied "I know that most kids of today are into this stupid anti-hero garbage at the movies, but this film called "ROSEMARY'S BABY" which I may remind you is nearing completion will be out in theatres everywhere this summer & I for one do not intend to allow the good citizens of ITASCA COUNTY to be subjected to seeing horror movies that are linked the Bible under any circumstances!" "How do you propose we keep it from being seen in our county? Do we just up & boycott the film theatres, or arrest any ITASCA COUNTY movie theatre owner whom will try to make money by showing it here?" "A good point, FLAGG. I'll issue an ultimatum to the county film review board & if they feel it shouldn't be shown here then the film itself will be boycotted instead of the theatres in the county, but if they say 'Let's show it any way!' I'll wait until it arrives & then we arrest the theatre owner, owners (depending on how many) if any decide to show & possibly risk bankruptcy for keeps!?" "Okay. Meanwhile, I'll make a lil' ol' trip to NEW YORK'S famed DAKOTA APARTMENTS and find out how many scenes have already been filmed and also see if they've followed the script according to Mr. LEVIN'S novel as written by IRA LEVIN!!!???" "Be my guest, FLAGG!"

So while FLAGG went about his spying work, RADAR gathered the county film review board together for a top secret meeting at the ADDAMS mansion on CEMETERY LANE that very night! So while they had their meeting, down in FORT WAYNE, INDIANA; FRANK BURNS was also reading the same magazine article at a friend's house and what he had to say was this "HOLY SHIT!!! Some Jewish writer has written a novel connected to the book of Revelations in the Bible, and this magazine writer is trying to make sure the AMERICAN PUBLIC sees to it that the film fails when it reaches theatres. Well, I don't care to see a movie like it, unless RUTH GORDON gets something like, the Best Supporting Actress Oscar at the academy awards ceremony next year!?" as he chuckled with a fiendish grin. Also, FRANK BURNS went out and actually bought a copy of LEVIN'S novel "ROSEMARY'S BABY" to read for himself and he liked it, especially when SATAN rapes ROSEMARY so as to make her pregnant!!!

So back at the meeting the main speaker being one, MAUDE FRICKERT said "Now ladies & gentlemen. We as honest, upright, religious citizens in this here county have to decide the following: Do we want a movie showing the Devil raping a young girl and making her pregnant, or do we wanna boycott this film in order to teach a lesson to some of those HOLLYWOOD kooks & show them that this is not the kind of a movie that we want in our neighborhood movie theatres? Now those who wanna see the movie come to this county raise your left hand only. For those of us who'd rather boycott the movie from the county period just raise your right hands!" Within 20 seconds a lot of right hands went up & then MAUDE FRICKERT said "Hmmm. It looks to me like none of us wanna see this movie at all! So the motion carries. "ROSEMARY'S BABY" is hereby boycotted from all movie theatres in ITASCA COUNTY, MINNESOTA: U.S.A. & meeting adjourned!" That was that. No horror film linked to the book of Revelations would be shown in ITASCA COUNTY at all!
