Chapter 11: Radar & the Hippies

Well, is good for PETE ARON to be back in his old hometown of lil' ol' GRAND RAPIDS, MINNESOTA: U.S.A., especially with his bride PAT BIGELOW STODDARD ARON (now divorced from FORMULA-1 race driver SCOTT STODDARD, whom was now filling in for PETE one a for keeps type level with the YAMURA racing team). Also, NINO BARLINI & his bride LISA were enjoying life in the land of the free & the home of the brave, too! PETE had a take-home-patrol-car & NINO was assigned to the motorcycle patrol division of the ITASCA COUNTY SHERIFF'S DEPARTMENT. Now 1966 was a rather odd year for law enforcement in AMERICA. The BEATNIKS were giving way to the HIPPIES for starters, & as BOB DYLAN once sang before "THE TIMES THEY ARE A CHANGIN'".

Of course, KLINGER whom since 1963 was CHIEF-OF-DETECTIVES for the ITASCA COUNTY SHERIFF'S DEPARTMENT at the rank of INSPECTOR & he was investigating some suspicious activities of sorts dealing with illegal narcotics. "Where were all of these narcotics coming from?" he wondered to himself as he kept up the work of his investigation. So by posing as a middle-aged type whom decided join the hippies rather remain a conservative creep, well, KLINGER just felt that it would allow for him infiltrate the hippie communes & flush out the peddlers of the illegal narcotics! Of course, he brought SOON-LEE out on some of the looking around trips as well as the stakeouts since SOON-LEE & her (now) thigh-lengthed hair (parted in the middle) made it possible for her to also blend in with the hippie crowds as well. Also, (believe it or not) MAUREEN O'REILLY had let her own naturally red hair get to exactly 5'FT. from scalp to tip just like, the wig worn by the great actress MAUREEN O'HARA in the 1955 film called "LADY GODIVA", & now MRS. MAUREEN (BIGELOW) O'REILLY had officially earned the reputation of being the LADY GODIVA of the O'REILLY family!!!!!

Well, by now she & RADAR had been married for about 12yrs. & she was still bearing sons fathered by her husband RADAR O'REILLY up to this point!!!!! Of course, as an added precaution of safety RADAR had made arrangements to plant a listening device in J. EDGAR HOOVER'S office to learn of plots against DR. KING & others of civil rights movement of the time. RADAR didn't seem to mind the hippies doing sit-ins & picketing govt. buildings so long as it was legal & peaceful both! Any hippies caught with illegal narcotics in their possession would be jailed & arrested legally speaking speaking. Now & then if some of the non-narcotics using hippies were to overhear plans to bring a big batch of the illegal narcotics to ITASCA COUNTY, well, RADAR had KLINGER prepare to move in for a kill of some kind resulting in massive arrests of all sorts! So far the BUBBLINO crime family of the ELMIRA, NEW YORK suburb of HORSEHEADS were watching ITASCA COUNTY all these years & wanting revenge on RADAR for the shooting their top assassins MARIO BANDUCCI and NICHOLAS STIVIC. BANDUCCI was a descendant of ITALIAN speaking SARDINIANS from the island of SARDINA off the coast of ITALY. STIVIC came from a long line of POLISH folks and although he was the black sheep of his family, his brother CASSAMIR whom ran a florist shop in CHICAGO and had been in charge of raising their nephew MIKE STIVIC since MIKE'S father STANLEY died. Any way, step one of of getting their revenge was under construction c/o CARLO GAMBINO, the boss of bosses. GAMBINO'S brother-in-law namely, PAUL CASTALANO and a young SICILIAN-AMERICAN named JOHN GOTTI were planning to bring in the biggest shipment of Marijuana from MEXICO as well as Heroin from TURKEY, not mention stocking up on #.5 capsules filled with Lye-Surgic-Acid-Dye-Ethylamide-Tarphate, or in more or less common terms LSD-25. This stock piling of illegal narcotics would be even more valuable than the Heroin bust made by N.Y.P.D. Detectives EDDIE "POPEYE" EGAN & SONNY "CLOUDY" GROSSO, whose story would be told by author ROBIN MOORE when 20TH CENTURY FOX would make their big money-maker "THE FRENCH CONNECTION". One hippie in GREENWICH VILLAGE got wind of it & told both the N.Y.P.D. & a fellow hippie in ITASCA COUNTY. The hippie in ITASCA COUNTY told RADAR & then after contacting the N.Y.P.D., RADAR was told that it was okay for him to be in on the bust! But a few crooked N.Y.P.D. officers called up fellow officers in HORSEHEADS, whom then called BENITO BUBBLINO and told him "O'REILLY is gonna bust GAMBINO for possession of the dope!" Before he could make plans for RADAR'S demise through death, one bookie in HORSEHEADS called a guy in TOLEDO, whom in turn called KLINGER & then it was up to KLINGER to tag along with RADAR in order to put the monkey wrench into the BUBBLINOS plans! It worked! BUBBLINOS assassins were nabbed and then after they talked, J.EDGAR HOOVER made plans for them to be hauled to a prison camp with a chain gang down in MISSISSIPPI. After all, if they failed either BENITO BUBBLINO or the boss of the assassins whom just like them was also wanted by INTERPOL would've put them 6'FT. underground just for confessing to KLINGER. But neither BUBBLINO nor the boss of the assassins knew where the southeastern U.S. Prison Camp was, chain gang and all!

Now things were fairly normal when the bust was made & most of the suspects, except GOTTI were apprehended. So once again things were calm in ITASCA COUNTY for at least another year.
