Chapter One

"Women! The mail is here," yelled Chris from the dinning room. He had just gotten back from work. He was my room mate and one of my best friends..although we were more like brother and sister. We even tried playing it off that we were but it didn't work out so well...mostly because of the fact that he is a big black guy..and well even though I am mixed I look more like white then black.

"Whatta I get?" I asked Chris as I entered the room. He was flipping throughout the huge stack of mail.

"Junk...bill..bill...junk...draft board...junk...." he said flipping through the mail more carefully to see who they were from.

"Draft board?" I asked him curiously. Why would anyone be sending a draft notice here? Neither Chris or I could be drafted into the Korean War...we were both as you would call colored. I mean I didn't look like it..but it was what I marked one the form I had sent to the draft board about a year ago when the war first started. My heart started pounding. I had been a surgeon for a few years, but having guys come in and see them blown to pieces....it just wasn't my thing. The thought of having to live under army rules and regulations again didn't exactly thrill me much. I had been in the Navy before. I worked as nurse on a battleship. Then I was discharged for an ancient that happened involving a general and a great white shark.

Chris opened the letter from the draft board that was address to me, and read carefully. After about a minute he told me that I was to leave for Korea the next morning. I didn't want to go to Korea, that's where all the fighting was. I had seen way to many people getting shot and killed already in my life...but to go patch them up just so they could go get shot of holes for me to put back together again. It sounded more like a vicious cycle to me. It didn't thrill me at all. Quite frankly I didn't want to have anything to do with it.

"I can't believe this," I said to Chris. "How could..."

"Don't worry, the war can't go on forever. You'll be back home before you know it." Chris was hugging and holding me trying to calm me down.

"I don't want to go."

"I know, why don't you go pack some, then get some rest." He said pushing me off towards my room. He handed me the notice, and I slowly stumbled to my room. "What should I take with me," I asked myself. I read over the notice. It said that I was going to San Francisco, then to Tokyo, then Kimpo, then the 4077th M*A*S*H. I would be the new colonel there.

"Chris," I said as I quietly pushed the door of his room open. I was in my pjs, a pair of light blue flannel pants, and a tank top with a puppy on it. I had my stuffed toy bear in my arms. It was like a small child going into their parents room for comforting after they had a bad dream. Chris and I were really close. We could sleep in the same bed without it meaning anything and without the worry that something would spark between us. If something was to spark between us it would have happened a long time ago.

"What is it?" he asked as he pushed the covers off of the top half of the body and sat up.

"I can't sleep." As soon as the words came out of my mouth, he was making me a spot right next to him. I climbed into the bed, slipped under the covers, and cuddled up with Chris.

"I made you some brownies for the road," he said as he gently ran his fingers through my hair. All I did was look up at him and smile. He was a very good cook and baker.

" Women....wake up."

"What?" I moaned as rolled over. Chris was standing over me.

"Your going to miss your flight." Oh my goodness! I jumped out of Chris's bed and flew into my room. Good thing I had finished packing the night before. I had my uniform but didn't have time to put it on. It looked so uncomfortable. I slipped out of pjs and tossed them into one of the two bags on the floor. I slipped into a white shirt and black shorts and slipped on my sandals, grabbed both of my bags and ran out the door. Chris out there waiting with the car running. The trunk was open for me to put my bags in the back. I tossed them in, slammed the trunk shut and hopped into the passenger seat next to Chris.

"Here," he said while handing me a giant blue tin. I looked at him curiously. Then I went to open it, but Chris stopped me and told me to open it when I got to Korea. I sat the tin in front of me on the floorboard. I was so nervous.

"Ya alright?" Chris looked over at me with a a cheesy smile.

"What if the people don't like me there?"

"You'll be fine," he said. "How do you want me to tell Andrew that your in Korea...he would never believe anyone."

"Just break up with him for me please."

"And what have him try to kick my ass," Chris said sarcastically.

"Fine, I'll do it myself." Andrew and I had been together for a long time.
