"The Aftereffects of War Part 3 ~ Hawkeye's Nightmare"

By nsalem

"You're not getting rid of me that easy," Trapper said as he sat down on the other bed.

"Don't you have a movie to go see?" Hawkeye asked.

"I've seen it a hundred times. I want to stay here."

"Uhha. Well what do you want to do?"

"How about talk?"

"Okay how come you didn't leave a note?"

"I couldn't. It happened so fast."

"How come you never sent me any letters, never called me after you left?"

"Because I wanted to forget about all of it. All of the pain. I was like you in a sense. Couldn't stand the pain long enough to have to forget it all."

"What pain?"

"Henry's death. By the time I got over it, it was to late to call you. The war was over and I didn't know how to contact you. And now this 30 years latter."

"How's the wife and kids?"

"They're doing fine. They'll be here in a few days to see me."

"Oh."

2 hours later in Hawkeye's dreams

"Rule number one is young men die. Young men die. Men die. Die die. And rule number two is doctors can't change rule number one. Can't change rule number one. Change rule number one. Rule number one. Number one. ONe."

"But Henry. But Henry. Henry. Henry," Hawkeye kept yelling.

Waking up from the nightmare

"Hawkeye, Hawkeye," Trapper said trying to wake Hawkeye up.

"Henry, Oh its you Trapper."

"You want to talk about your nightmare?"

"NO."

"It might make you feel better."

"I don't want to talk about it."

"Trapper where are you?" BJ yelled from the family room.

"In here," Trapper said. Trapper got up and walked out of the room and held the knob while closing. BJ came to him. "Peg can you stay with Hawkeye for me Please?"

"Why?"

"Please just do it."

"Okay."

Peg went in. Trapper and BJ walked to the family room where Sidney and Daniel was. "What's going on?" BJ asked.

"Hawkeye tried to commit suicide. I don't want him alone."

"We should commit him," Sidney said.

"And put him where no one understands him. No way," Trapper said.

"I agree with Trapper," BJ said. "All a psychiatric ward would do is make him feel worse."

"What about a va hosipital?" Sidney asked.

"No better. Everyone there hasn't seen what we saw," Trapper said.

"But we got to keep an eye on him," Sidney said.

"We can take shifts till we figure something out," Trapper said.

"Who goes first?" BJ said. "I don't want Peg to stay there without knowing what's going on."

"I'll go," Sidney said. "I need to talk to him anyways."

"Okay Sidney. But be careful," Trapper said.

Sidney went to Hawkeye's room. "Peg you can go now. Thanks for staying," Sidney said to Peg.

"But," Peg started to protest.

"BJ and Trapper will explain."

"Okay," Peg said while leaving.

"Are you going to commit me?" Hawkeye asked noticing the conversation.

"No," Sidney said. "We decided that wasn't best for you."

"Figures. Am I under 24 hour watch?"

"Yes. Want to talk about what's on your mind?"

"No," Hawkeye said.

"You got to talk about it sooner or later."

"No I don't."

"Why not go to sleep Hawkeye?"

"I don't want to."

"You've been having nightmares haven't you?"

"Yes."

"Want to talk about them?"

Hawkeye sat up and looked Sidney right in the eye. "Sidney you once told me that my nightmares will end when the big one ends but now that the big one is over how come I still have nightmares?"

"Because you don't believe the big one ended. When Henry died, you knew that peace doesn't stop death. And death is the big nightmare to you. Now do you want to talk about it?"

"No," Hawkeye said as he lied back on his bed.

"Uhha," Sidney sat back.

"Don't you have someone else to bother."

"No your the only one I know with a problem."

"Sidney why not go back to new york and I'll go back to Maine and we can leave each other alone?"

"You're not getting rid of me that easy."

*In the family room*

"I don't understand. Why would he take asprin instead of using a gun?" Peg asked.

"He doesn't like guns. He's totally against guns. Asprin can do the job without guns," BJ explained to his wife.

A knock came at the door. BJ went to the door. "Who is it?"

"It's some old friends," came the answer from outside.

BJ opened the door. "Hi Colonel. Nice to see you again."

"Its Sherm to you sunny. Haven't heard that since the war."

BJ let everyone in just noticing two more people behing Sherman. "Hi Sherman. Hi Klinger and Soon-lee. What brings you guys here?"

"Well we heard on the tv about Hawkeye and we thought we'd see how everythings going."

"Come in Come in. Oh sorry Father I didn't see you there."

"Thats okay no one ever notices me," Father mulcahy said hearing back full. "Can I see Hawkeye?"

"Sure go relieve Sidney," BJ said.

"What do you mean relieve?" Sherman questioned.

"Hawkeye tried to commit suicide," Trapper spoke up from the couch. "Long time no see Klinger. Father. And whos this?"

"Retired Col. Sherman Potter. Replacement for Col. Blake," Sherman said and right away regretted it because of the look on Trappers face. "Sorry son. I know he was a great man."

Trapper looked better so Mulcahy walked into Hawkeyes room. "Now its a week reunion," Hawkeye said.

"Hi Hawkeye how are you?" Father Mulcahy said while Sidney walked out.

"How do you think I am?"

"You look tired."

"Thats exactly how I feel so we're even."

"Hawk God..."

"Don't give me any religious stuff Father. I don't believe there is a God anymore."

"Why Hawkeye?"

"How could there be a god when it lets a man like Henry die?"

Not knowing what to say Mulcahy changed the subject. "Why don't you go to sleep Hawkeye?"

"I can't sleep."

"Why?"

"I don't want to talk about it."

"Why not try to sleep?"

*one hour later*

"Don't go there. Don't go," Hawkeye screams from his dream.

"Wake up Hawkeye its just a dream," Hawkeye opened his eyes to see Henry shaking him. "Hawkeye its me BEEJ."

Hawkeye rubbed his eyes and say BJ. "Oh hi BJ. So are you now on shift."

"Hawkeye whats wrong?"

"I don't want to talk about it."

"You have to talk about it. What happened on that island?"

"I already told you. Henry died."

"Theres something your not telling us what is it?"

"I let all those guys go looking alone without me."

"What?"

"All twenty-one men died because I didn't argue hard enough to stay."

"Its not your fault Hawkeye."

"I could have died with them. I should have died with them."

"You couldn't have known."

"I should have known. They all died for nothing."
