To paraphase what FinestKindinTN mentioned, I felt like the fights between Hawkeye and B.J., although they grew in frequency in later seasons, helped progress their relationship, and one of the reasons why I prefer theirs over Hawkeye's relationship with Trapper. I always felt like Hawkeye and Trapper's relationship was more out of convenience; like they were just a couple of college buddies with common goals and interests - their dynamic felt more like a shtick after a couple of seasons. With B.J., Hawkeye was still his usual insane self, but Beej could be more of a voice of reason, sometimes they didn't see eye-to-eye on things, that may cause a riff between them, but at the end of the day, they still had each other's backs, as "Preventative Medicine" illustrates: even after their fight about the unnecessary appendectomy and Hawkeye saw how little it did to lighten their surgical load, rather than giving him an, "I told you so!" lecture, B.J. still has Hawk's back. Their dynamic was far more dynamic and had depth to it.
