Somehow Col Potter was young and single and saw Brandi do her dance in WWI (1917-1918), then married, had a son that got through dental school ("everybody's got two sets of gums - that's where the money is"), lost his son and gained a daughter who fished until she got interested in boys, and all in 34 years (1918 to 1952). Not impossible, but it'd be a stretch.
A granddaughter was born during his time at the 4077 and a grandson ate a bug (so maybe 2-5 years old at the time). Again, a lot to cram into 34 years.

I suspect that this could be related to the fact that around 50 would seem a bit young to have served in his 3rd war. M*A*S*H was written in the 1970s to early 80s. Research on such things was much much harder then.
I realize that most people would know that between WWI, WWII, and then Korea, 3 wars in 34 years, give or take, was possible, but 3 wars by age 50? That might lead to a few questions.
Look at the money in poker games. People in the 1970s might know about the poker stakes, but the younger audience might not. In the 1950s, winning $100 in a poker game was a huge amount. But in the 1970s it didn't seem as believable as being a lot.
In the 1970s it was also rare for a person to be a grandfather by age 50, especially if there were a few grandchildren. In the 1950s grandchildren at 50 was rare, not unheard of, but rare.
Look at the clothing.
It was a show based in the 1950s, but also a message on Vietnam. A certain amount of writer discretion, and stretching of the timeline, and all is expected.

At some point I realized that all any show has is getting through the current season and trying to get the show on the line-up for the next season. I've never been involved in a show, but I can imagine that there's enough to do without having to worry about consistency in timeline or creating character backstories that all subsequent scripts have to be in compliance with.
It's hard enough to not repeat themes, surgeries, injuries, antics and all. Add in the fact that there were some major cast changes.
Trapper - B.J
Blake - Potter
Frank - Charles
Radar leaving with Klinger becoming clerk
Countless nurse changes
Margaret's relationships with Frank, Donald, Scully, the reporter, and more.
Trying to stay up with the medical terms, and such.
And more.
