Good "Young" Chaplain???

In "Welcome to Korea", when Hawkeye was telling B.J. about the camp, he mentioned that they had a "good young chaplain." William Christopher was already in his 40s, and was actually 3 years OLDER than Alda in real life. Just how old was Mulcahy supposed to be? I know Radar was supposed to be 19 or 20 yet Gary was in his late 20s early 30s when the show began.

Yeah, I raised an eyebrow too

Yeah, I love that comment as well. Gary was about the only one that looked anywhere close to the age he was supposed to be; and the wool cap hid his receding hairline. I got the impression from the MASH novel that in reality everyone should have been about 10 years younger than they really were. Most of the surgeons in their late 20s, the CO mid-30s-mid-40's, almost no one else over 35, with lots of folks in their 20s.

My thoughts.

I suspect that Hawk was referring to the fact that Mulcahy was young, for many priests. Many of the priests in the war were much older. If you think about it, it it can take years to become a priest, and since many do so a bit later in life, they're gonna start older. I highly doubt they'd put a brand new priest in a war zone. Even those that start right out of college. Add a minimum of 5 years to that, making the first priests in their mid 20s, at the earliest. Add in a few years of experience, you're talking early 30s. Therefore, relative to other priests in a war zone, He was relatively young.
