This ever happened to you??

I'm done with my day (or at least I'm at a stopping point) and am flipping through the TV line-up, and, hey, there's an episode of MASH on - yea! I turn it on and it's one of my least favorite episodes, Comrades in Arms. I think this happened three times this week. This ever happened to you?? (Not necessarily with this episode, but one of your least favorites or disliked)

Nope, because I usually check the cable listings in advance to see what episodes are going to be airing, and if they're ones I don't like, then I just don't watch. Likewise, if I'm watching on DVD, I just skip the episodes I dislike.

However, I HAVE been having a problem this week: Nickelodeon was supposed to be airing new episodes of ALVINNN!!! AND THE CHIPMUNKS (I'm a big Chipmunks fan), but everytime I've tuned in according to the schedule, another show called THE LOUD HOUSE has been on instead; Nick has become really notorious for unreliable and inconsistent scheduling, and this isn't the first time different shows were on when new episodes of ALVINNN were supposed to be airing.

Nope....

Not since I've got all 11 seasons on DVD.

It happened again...

...flipped channels again, saw from the listings the episode was "Our Finest Hour." I was safe. Turned it to the episode - Margaret and Hawkeye are screaming at the artillery in the hut and start kissing each other. Geez, I can't get away from that episode!

That's funny! Although I guess I don't hate that episode. Certainly it's not my favorite, but I do enjoy the humanness they both display in "Comrades in Arms." I'd rather watch "Comrades" than "Our Finest Hour," frankly...why not just put on the whole episodes? And isn't "Our Finest Hour" the one with the lost master reel, with the grainy quality throughout?

I figure most of us have an episode or two we just can't stand - "Comrades" is one of mine. I was just curious if you all had run into a time when you can't get away from your most disliked episode?
Yes, "Our Finest Hour" is the grainy one. I think on the DVD set I have there is some explanation that the masters of the episode were destroyed and all they had was a version of the syndicated episode.

Yes, I have the whole series on DVD BUT I love to just change the channel and BOOM; MASH is on! I too, have noticed that between TV Land, ME-TV and WGN it keeps recycling the same episodes older AND newer! IS like the same 15-20 episodes keep playing on a rotating list! Welcome to Korea, Fade In Fade Out, Incubator, Goodbye Radar, etc have some much lately!!

Have you noticed that TV Land and WGN seem to be on roughly the same cycle (ME-TV isn't in my regular channel rotation)? I'll see one on one channel then a day or two later the same episode's on the other. I think that was part of the reason for my original post.

Yes, kinda sorta they were, WGN and TVLAND were older early seasons for awhile and METV was later seasons for awhile, but now that's all changed.

I just can't watch M*A*S*H on TV anymore: so much cutting and butchering, really disjoints and mangles the show - sometimes entire sequences and scenes will get the ax, which causes major confusion . . . like in "The Ringbanger," why did Henry have paper wrapped around his ear when Hawkeye gets him drunk? Because in a scene that was cut from syndication, Henry was trimming his hair in his tent when Frank barged in and startled him, causing him to slice his ear with the scissors.

I tend toward laziness, even in low-commitment endeavors like TV watching, so I just flip channels instead of getting my DVDs out.

I will be watching a syndicated episode and say to myself, "Hey, they missed something," after one of these edited scenes. I think full episodes are about 24 minutes - You know what a syndicated episode runs?

Good question! My guess is based on other shows i watch that its at least 2 minutes cut out.

Earlier episodes (like the first four or five seasons) were 26 minutes, afterwards they seem fluxuate between 24-25 minutes, because commercial breaks back in those days were much shorter and less invasive.

Nowadays, a half-hour show without commercials tend to be 17-21 minutes, and older shows not only have a whole big chunk of each episode cut out to condense it down to fit in that timeframe, but since commercial breaks are STILL getting longer and longer, a lot of older shows - in addition to being cut - are now also being sped up . . . you can tell because certain shows the characters either sound like they're caffinated (like TBS's reruns of SEINFELD), or high on helium (like TV Land's reruns of THE ANDY GRIFFITH SHOW).

Now, if you think that's quite a difference, hour-long shows without commercials used to be anywhere betwen 50-52 minutes; now they're 41-43 . . . that's not even 3/4 hour.

Are the distributors of shows charging more so the networks compensate by speeding things up or cutting things out to air extra commercials?
